Bury Lake Clean Up

Bury Lake Clean Up

Event, News, Recreational, Reports, Uncategorized
This one needed a plan A, B and C. (A) was the Grand Union Canal and the River Colne loop, (B) was the Grand Union and backwaters, and (C) was the Club (Bury) Lake. Plan A, due to the weather and rain last week all the water levels had risen massively, making the River Colne a grade 3 water. Due to having to keep both hands on the paddle in grade 3, litter picking was out of the question, so plan A was dismissed. Plan B, the Canal and possibly some backwaters. This became a no no on the morning of the clean up, due to high water levels and a fast flowing current of flood water across the Canal at the Junction near Tesco. Also It seemed some pollution…

(Dave, Nigel, Sue, Pierre, Jai, Nathan, Phillip, Hannah, Conrad, Andy.)(Ana + 6 Paddle boarding with Ana) On Sunday March 12th 2023, 10 Nomads from Rickmansworth and 7 Paddle boarders from Stand up paddle boarding with Ana from Tonbridge met at the Mytchett centre for a 10 mile paddle along the Basingstoke canal, 5 miles up and return. Once prepped, dressed and ready to get on the water we gathered for the usual safety brief (given by Dave) and who carefully passed the warm up on to Nigel. There was also a group of ramblers gathering at the nearby campsite who gave a bit of an audience for 17 paddlers acting out their normal morning routine with some running up and downstairs, brushing teeth and doing all sorts of things in…

First 2021 Recreational Session

First 2021 Recreational Session

News, Recreational, Uncategorized
On Easter Monday eight enthusiastic Nomad members met at the Aquadrome for the club's first post second lockdown recreational paddling session. We were mostly a bit rusty and the weather, though sunny, threatened snow for later. After a quick discussion we split into two groups with four members including Mike heading for Bury lake and four others including Matt heading up the Grand Union to the river Chess. Mike's group on Bury lake reportedly did three or four laps of the lake buffeted by an arctic wind and snow flurries before retiring around 11.30, while Matt's group got to the top of the navigable Chess and returned via a play stop on the W shaped weir on the Chess, which was flowing the best we'd seen it - enough to…

New Sunday sessions well subscribed!

New Sunday sessions well subscribed!

News, Polo, Recreational, Uncategorized
Nomads practicing social distancing The second Sunday since Nomad's return to paddling was well subscribed with the first recreational session and the polo session both full and the second recreational session half full.As Chilly and the junior squad practiced on the polo pitch, the recreational groups paddled round Bury lake getting used to the feel of their boats (and themselves!) again before venturing further afield. This may not sound too exciting, but some games and high brace and skulling support practice livened it up considerably. The first opportunity for river paddling for confident paddlers will be on Sunday the 12th of July on the Thames trip at Henley. Please do renew your membership and sign up for the Sunday and Wednesday sessions and trips, which will run as much as possible depending…

Thanks to all members who attended the sessions particularly the coaches/experienced paddlers who ran/supervised the sessions. Mid-week sessions will restart again in April/May next year. Rickmansworth Festival 2014 Feedback Across both Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th of May the Rickmansworth Aquadrome hosted the annual Rickmansworth festival. The event is a prime opportunity for the Nomad Kayak Club to raise its profile, secure additional members and generally highlight the sport of canoeing. This year we were blessed with excellent weather which really made a difference, this good luck coupled with some fine planning from key members of the NKC committee saw us have probably our most successful event to date. Key statistics: 50+ NKC members helped across the weekend, many thanks to you all 75+ members of the public paid to ‘come and try’ canoeing A further 60+ members of the public are now keen to try canoeing at NKC This is all very promising and…
