Paddleboarding Opportunities at Nomads
Beginners/Novices
Unfortunately we don’t run beginner sessions/courses just yet but if you are keen to try paddleboarding for the first time, 1hr SUP taster sessions costing £20/session run through BLYM. Following your SUP taster session you can progress your paddleboarding by taking the 2hr Paddle UK (formerly British Canoeing) Paddle Start ‘SUP’ Award (£48/person). Again this course is currently run through BLYM and details can be found on the BLYM website www.blym.org.uk or by emailing courses@blym.org.uk.
Paddleboarding at NKC Recreational Sessions at Rickmansworth Aquadrome
Holding the Paddle UK (formerly British Canoeing) Start ‘SUP’ Award, or demonstration of equivalent or higher competence is the prerequisite for participating in our weekly recreational sessions, as you will need to be able to:
- Safely launch and recover your stand up paddleboard both aided and unaided.
- Forward paddling whilst lying flat, kneeling and standing.
- Balance the board whilst kneeling and standing.
- Turn and control your board using a range of turns.
- Know how to safely fall and complete a self-rescue.
Experienced paddleboarders are welcome to join any of our Sunday (10:00-12:00) and Wednesday (18:00-20:00) recreational sessions with your own equipment. The non-member session charge for such sessions where personally owned equipment is used is £5 per session payable on the day by cash or card. For those without their own equipment, the Club has added a few SUPs to the fleet for 2024. The non-member session fee where equipment is provided is £8 per session. A non-member may paddle up to 3 times at the Club before having to take out membership. Attendance at Aquadrome based sessions (Bury Lake, Grand Union Canal & local rivers) and use of equipment (subject to availability) is included in annual Club membership.
To participate in one of our Aquadrome based sessions all you need to do is sign up online Member Session & Trips Sign Up – Nomad Kayak Club so we know to expect you. If signing up for the first time you will be contacted by session leader with further details.
NB: we have access to an industrial compressor for inflating paddleboards.
