Our next Paddle Award courses will run later in the year and it is envisaged that the first courses of the year will run during the Whitsun half term. Paddle Award: Paddle Start – Kayak

Paddle Award: Paddle Discover

The next step towards becoming an independent paddler, developing an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling; developing your decision making and practical skills, giving you confidence on the water.You need to be aged 10 or above (aged 13 or above or our October courses).
You will be asked to demonstrate your ability to launch a kayak and paddle a basic course, otherwise you will be returned to the Paddle Start course on the second day.

Paddle Award: Paddle Explore

The final British Canoeing Paddle Award offered by Nomads, this course gives you ownership, allowing you to choose where you move next in the world of paddlesport, it includes journeying where you take a trip in your chosen craft and are required to demonstrate your ability to confidently manoeuvre your craft on lakes, canals and rivers.You need to be aged 10 or above (aged 13 or above or our October courses) and have demonstrated that you have recently attended a Nomad led Paddle Discover course.

You will also need a packed lunch for the day.

Nomad 2 Star Kayak and 3 Star Kayak Courses (NKC Members Only)

With a growing demand for Club members to be able to have demonstrable experience before undertaking more demanding river trips we have resurrected the old star tests for the benefit of Club members. The star tests are courses aimed at providing members with the knowledge to develop their personal competency in a kayak.

2 Star Kayak SyllabusDurationCost
Nomad 2 star covers improved paddling, edging and manoeuvres and support strokes sufficient to avoid a capsize. We will also cover Eskimo rescues and the recovery of capsized paddlers.

Following a period of consolidated training that may include a pool session (Sat 18th June 2022 or Sat 16th July 2022) candidates will be required to present themselves for an assessment before obtaining their certificate.

3 Star Kayak SyllabusDurationCost
The Nomad 3 Star Kayak course takes place on moving water and introduces strokes and techniques to enable the candidate to successfully negotiate turbulent water with skills that include breaking in and out of the main flow, ferry gliding, edging and sculling. We also start to develop more aggressive support strokes and introduce candidates to paddle rolling.

Following a period of consolidated training that may include a pool session (Sat 18th June or Sat 16th July) candidates will be required to present themselves for an assessment before obtaining their certificate.

FSRT – Foundation Safety & Rescue Training Course

Do you want to know what to do if either you or others fall into the water? This course will support you to consider safe practices, provide practical solutions to common issues and appropriate responses to incidents, providing peace of mind when venturing out onto the water. An essential course for the independent paddler. This course is a prerequisite for British Canoeing Paddlesport Instructor.

Club Session Leader Training (NKC Members Only)

This classroom based course focusses on the safe delivery of activities for both the group and the benefit of the session leader. On the course we will look in to control measures to identify risks and discuss methods to keep everyone safe. We will also discuss session planning and how to deliver a rewarding yet safe activity.None – The course is aimed at Club members of any paddling ability that seek to begin development of their leadership skills to assist the Club in delivering safe and fun activities, whether that be managing a Club session on the lake, canal or river or wishing to develop their skills and appreciation associated with organising or supervising excursions further afield on more demanding water. 3 hours£10 (includes snack supper)
