Nene WWC trip report

Trip, Trip Reports
Five nomads descended on the Nene white water course in Northampton on Sunday to enjoy the white water. The weather could have been better, but we didn’t let this put us off even though some of us were in shorts! We thought it would be a good idea to start on the middle of the course to give Charlotte and Fane practice breaking in and out and ferry gliding with Ben and Ian showing us how it should be done. Very soon Fane and Charlotte were styling some nice moves, so it was time to let them loose on the bottom part of the course, which they paddled very nicely. At times it was like paddling in thick mud, as you'll see from the pictures. This was due to so…

Hertford Lea trip report

News, Reports, Trip, Trip Reports
On 11th March 7 Nomads including Sam on his first trip with the club traveled to Hertford to explore the river Lea led by Peter Scott, himself a former member of Herts canoe club. It started out sunny and warm as we launched in front of the impressive Herts canoe club clubhouse and headed downriver. Not far below we found the first two step weir, where we stayed a while practicing ferry glides and approaching the stopper under Peter's expert tutelage. No one was brave enough to go right in the stopper though, which looked a bit too munchy. We then attempted to turn left up the river Bean, but soon encountered a fisherman and decided not to continue. Instead we carried on down the Lea through country opening out…

River Dart trip report

Trip, Trip Reports
On the 10th and 11th of March 4 Nomads led by Nick Moore went all the way to Devon to paddle the Dart. Apparently it was well over the stones at the put in on the Saturday and many of the features were washed out, but dropped on the Sunday to a more normal paddling level. Thanks to Nick for leading the trip, Ian for the photo and Nigel for this video.

Abbey Stream trip report

News, Trip, Trip Reports
8 Nomads and a friend enjoyed a mainly sunny circular paddle up the Thames from Laleham, down the Abbey Stream to Chertsey weir and returning under the M3 to the start. The Thames was flowing well, so it was a bit of a slog upstream dodging the rowing fours to Penton hook lock, where we paused on the inside of the 'hook' for a breather and to look at Steve's old house on the opposite bank. Anthony led us off down the Abbey Stream through dense vegetation like Humphrey Bogart (without the leeches) and across country to stop at the site of the old Abbey for lunch and a mutual admiration of new kayaking gear. Suitably refreshed, we continued down the Abbey Stream to the punting rollers onto the Thames,…

Upper Wye trip report

News, Trip, Trip Reports
Five Nomads enjoyed pretty mild January weather to paddle the beautiful upper Wye between Builth and Glasbury on saturday and Newbridge and Builth on sunday led by Peter and Matt. We were ably assisted, encouraged and chauffered by Fane, who'd unfortunately injured his shoulder and so couldn't paddle. Saturday's paddle of nearly 20 miles was Charlotte's first taste of proper white water and not only did she make the distance, she also paddled all the rapids without problem in very good style. Well done! Everyone enjoyed the mixture of fantastic Welsh scenery interspersed with grade 2 and the odd grade 2-3 rapid every few miles and we arrive just as dusk was falling for hot showers and good food, drink and strained landlord's humour at the local pub. Sunday's paddle…
